National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Health Strategy

AWHN are very proud to publish the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Health Strategy. The strategy was launched at our National Conference in May and was collaboration between AWHN and NACCHO funded by the Australian Government through the Women's Leadership and Development Program 2009. The Strategy was written by Bronwyn Fredericks, Karen Adams and Sandy Angus after extensive consultation with Aboriginal women from every state and territory. Our challenge now is to make sure the recommendations withing this importnatn work are implemented. Please work with us to distribute the stratgey to your networks and take every opportunity to advocate for the implementation of the recommendations within it.

AWHN OPPOSES FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION OF ANY KIND


Email sent to the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, 31May, 2010

The Australian Women's Health Network is strongly opposed to any form of female genital mutilation, whether it be simply a small cut or radical surgery. We would like to strongly support the position of the Australian Federation of Graduate Women, who have written to you, opposing the approval of surgery in Australia.

The Australian Women's Health Network is also amazed that the College is considering making such surgery available and thereby approving of 'modified' procedures. We too hope that, after consideration, the College will totally and publicly repudiate any form of female genital mutilation, thereby positioning itself as a force to improve the status of women.

The Australian Women's Health Network (AWHN) is a community based, non-profit,
consultative organisation that provides a national voice on women's health issues.
AWHN was established in 1986 and operates as a women's health advocacy,
information and lobbying organisation, working with Government policy makers
and other agencies to improve the health and well-being of Australian women.

AWHN has affiliated Networks in all States and Territories of Australia. The State
and Territory Women's Health Networks are the member organisations of AWHN.
Both the State/Territory groups and the umbrella national organisation represent
a wide cross section of women, and organisations representing specific groups of
women. As health is interpreted in a broad social context, women from a range of
interest groups take up AWHN membership. The organisation cuts across political,
economic, social and ethnic barriers. Women's Health Networks frequently consult
with other organisations representing women and work together to address major
issues facing women.
